Abortion rights campaigners say only 10 per cent of Irish doctors are performing the procedure.

As a result of this, many women are left without essential medical care.

Since abortion was legalised in Ireland 5 years ago, the procedure is only available in 12 of the 19 maternity hospitals across the country.

Richael Carroll from the Abortion Rights Campaign says many doctors don't have the resources to give women the care they deserve:

'GP's don't feel like they are properly trained yet, which is a valid reason for not providing the care.'

'5 years post the legislation being brought in, I guess the question is why are these GP's not being trained up.'

The Government is also being urged to follow their colleagues in Northern Ireland and introduce safe access zones around abortion clinics.

Exclusion zones to block anti-abortion protests outside health clinics across the border will be introduced on Friday.

while the legislation here is making its way through the political system.

Abortion rights campaigners will take part in the 12th Annual March for Choice in Dublin this afternoon.

They are calling for the issue to be prioritised by the Minister for Health.

Richael Carroll says the exclusion zones are needed to provide safety for doctors and patients alike:

'It is definitely something that needs to be brought in here as a priority.'

'You can't have things like that, you have to have safe access to care.'
