Vanilla is often referred to being a safe and boring choice.

But, a new study by Oxford University has voted vanilla the most scent-sensational smell in the world.

The experts found that the sweet aroma is the most liked smell among all cultures and ethnicities.

And it was followed by butyrate - which smells like peaches.

It found the whiff created by isovaleric acid was the most hated smell, which many might associate with "cheesy feet".

Also finishing bottom of the poll was diethyl disulfide and 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine.

They smell like decaying fish and overly ripe green peppers, respectively.

The scientists discovered that cultural connotations or affiliations had little impact on how much someone liked a smell.

As, they chose ten scents to represent all the odours found in the world, as determined by a previous study that analysed almost 500 smelly molecules.

Overall, the trends were consistent for all ten compounds in all nine locations.

The researchers revealed that:

“Cultures around the world rank different odours in a similar way, no matter where they come from, but odour preferences have a personal - although not cultural - component,”
