The footage was filmed way back in 1935.

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA) has released footage of the extinct species known as a thylacine, or more commonly referred to as the Tasmanian Tiger.

The species has been declared fully extinct since 1936, and was one of only two marsupials to have a pouch in both sexes.

Posting the footage on Facebook, the organisation said: ''we have released a 21-second newsreel clip featuring the last known images of the extinct thylacine''.

The footage was captured way back in 1935 and by 1936 and shows“Benjamin” the last known surviving Tiger who later died in captivity.

The organistaion added that it hopes more footage of the animal still exists:

''As thylacines were exhibited in zoos elsewhere in Australia (Launceston, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide) and internationally (Washington, New York, London, Antwerp and Berlin) after the arrival of film, we remain optimistic that further footage may well surface in other collections.''
