If you live in the Irish countryside, silage can be the smell of the summer for a lot of people, and one homeowner isn't too happy about it..

Are you ever driving down a road, and then a whiff of silage hits you and you roll up the window?

There are mixed emotions. It's not the most pleasant smell, but it's a sign that the summer is here and the sun is likely splitting the stones.

Well, one homeowner has brought things further by preparing a formal complaint against the smell of nearby silage.

The anonymous householder wrote a letter to the Irish Times complaining about the stench from a neighbouring farm.

According to the writer, a farmer had been parking slurry tankers a few metres away from their house and a silage pit is less than 50 metres away too.

The homeowner has had to resort to putting up air fresheners and claims their quality of life has been affected.

Solicitor Patrick Shine has been offering advice, and says that the machinery coming in close contact is unavoidable, as the farmer has invested heavily in their business.

The issue of the silage pit being in close proximity to their house is something that can be brought to a local authority.

Nonetheless, aside from this person's issue, has the smell of silage ever been bad enough to warrant a complaint?

It might seem a bit dramatic, even if this is an isolated case. It's one of the unwritten rules of living in the countryside for most.
