Hotels in Venice have been giving guests with water pistols in a bid to tackle aggressive seagulls.
The Venice hoteliers association has had enough of gulls stealing food from guests dining outdoors.
They examined a number of options including hiring a falconer to hunt the gulls, which they deemed too expensive after trialling it.
They also considered deterring them with a special acoustic system or unpleasant odours which can't be perceived by humans.
But instead of all that they decided to just provide guests with water pistols.
They settled on the colour orange for the water guns as seagulls apparently don't like the colour.
Because they're put off by the colour, guests rarely have to use them and simply keeping them on the table is proving effective.
Enrico Mazzocco, manager of the Monaco & Grand Canal hotel, told The Times what made them take action against the birds.
“We decided to act after a customer lifted a croissant to his mouth and a lurking seagull dived and snatched it from his hand,” Mazzocco said.
“On another occasion a gull flew off with an entire steak, just as the waiter lifted the lid off the plate he was serving it on." he added.
We started placing the pistols on each table when the gulls start to circle,” he said.
