The children were aged between 10 and 14.

Four children in Australia got into one of their parents' car and drove for around 1,000km (600 miles) before being stopped by police the following day.

According to NSW police the children, aged between 10 and 14, loaded the SUV with fishing rods and left a goodbye note to their parents on Saturday.

Beginning their journey in Rockhampton, Queensland the children were eventually stopped near Grafton in New South Wales on Sunday night.

Upon being located by police, the young joyriders locked the doors and refused to get out, according to the Acting Police Inspector Darren Williams.

To get into the car, police smashed windows of the Nissan Patrol, which had previously been reported missing.

"They have locked themselves in the car and police have had to use a baton to get in to arrest them," Coffs-Clarence district acting inspector Darren Williams told reporters.

It was not clear which of the children had been behind the wheel, but Mr Williams said it was likely they had shared the driving.

"It is a long way, in excess of 1,000 (km) from Rockhampton down to Grafton," he said.

"I couldn't imagine one person driving that way in two days."

The children, who were found unharmed, have been taken into care.
