NASA is investigating an alleged crime committed in space in a first of its kind case.

The NASA administration is investigating a claim that an astronaut accessed the bank account of her ex from the International Space Station.

According to the The New York Times astronaut Anne McClain admits accessing the account from the ISS but denies any wrongdoing.

Her ex Summer Worden, reportedly filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

McClain who has since returned to earth said through a lawyer that she was making sure that the family's finances were in order and there was enough money to pay bills and care for Ms Worden's son, who they had been raising together prior to the split.

As a result Ms Worden filed a complaint and her family lodged one with NASA’s Office of Inspector General, accusing Ms. McClain of identity theft and improper access to Ms. Worden’s private financial records.

Ms McClain and Ms Worden, married in 2014 however four years later Worden filed for divorce.

Investigators from Nasa's have contacted both over the allegation, the New York Times reported.
