Well this is slightly embarrassing...

The massive rodent reportedly spotted in Dublin's Royal Canal yesterday  has turned out to be a native Irish Otter.

Residents in West Dublin had earlier been warned not to approach a semi-aquatic creature with orange teeth - thought to be an invasive rodent known as the coypu.

However, Waterways Ireland now believes it was a case of mistaken identity.

The creature was seen near the Royal Canal in Ashtown, Dublin yesterday.

Residents in the area had been advised to be on the lookout for the ‘large invasive rodent species’, which Waterways Ireland says is highly damaging to local wildlife.

The coypu, which is native to South America, is also know to carry a number of diseases that can be harmful to humans and domestic animals.

But I guess we have nothing to worry about anymore!
