A worthy food to have an international day right?
Yep you read that right, it's International Bacon Day!
A whole day to celebrate scrumptious bacon, and a wonderful excuse to eat it.
International Bacon Day or Bacon Day is an "unofficial observance" where people choose to celebrate by cooking with Bacon.
It's typically held on the first Saturday of September each year, which is today 4th Sept.
So to celebrate, here's some quirky and random bacon facts...
Fact #1:
In a survey conducted by Bord Bia in 2015, Bacon and Cabbage topped the poll as Ireland's favourite meal.
The same survey also found that 95 percent of Irish households regularly buy bacon.
And it found that we, as a nation, (at the time) spend €196 million annually on it!
Fact #2:
Ever wondered where the phrase "bringing home the bacon" comes from?
Well, as you may know it's another way of saying 'making money'.
But it actually originated in 17th century England.
And it referred to churches awarding sides of bacon to men who swore before God they hadn't argued with their wives in a year and a day!
Fact #3:
Bacon is a truly special food, as it holds quite a prestigious title...
It was the first food eaten on the moon!
On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin made history by being the first humans to land and walk on the moon.
But they also made history with bacon by consuming it as the first meal on the moon!
