''Greta’s a time traveller, from the future, and she’s here to save us''.

A conspiracy theory has gone viral after a photo from 1898 emerged of a girl with a striking resemblance to climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The photo shows three young children working at a gold mine in Canada, one of which is a girl sporting Greta’s signature hair braid and...well, her exact facial features.

The picture was recently discovered in archives at the University of Washington and historians have traced it back to around 1898.

And as they tend to do, conspiracy theorists have taken the idea that Greta is a time travelling teen sent from the future to try and stop global warming from happening.

''Greta’s a time traveller, from the future, and she’s here to save us'', said one twitter user.

''Maybe she is from the future who was sent back in time to key moments in history to stop climate change'', said another.

People also speculated over what she could have been doing in the past ...

''So what was she doing 120 years in the past!?'' One person asked.

To which another responded, ''maybe trying to kill the person who invented plastic''.

Obviously it's highly unlikely that Greta is actually time traveller... but you have to admit it does make for a great movie plot.

A time travelling teen sent back to key moments in the past to stop a global catastrophe... someone get a movie studio onto this, stat!
