Just a casual 4,676 days late.

A motorist in Kildare has had their car confiscated, after Gardaí discovered they hadn't paid motor tax for a whopping 13 years.

On Monday (17 February), the vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint in Kill.

Gardaí then used the ACTIVE Mobility App, to reveal that the tax was out of date by 4,676 days, or 12.8 years.

The unnamed driver will now face official proceedings.

The app, first trialed in December of 2017, allows members of An Garda Síochána to access driver and vehicle history while carrying out a roadside check.

"The device scans the registration plates and automatically returns relevant data," notes a Garda statement.

"The device can also scan a driving licence and automatically return real time information on the roadside to the Garda. This has proved successful in identifying false or forged driving licences and disqualified drivers.

"The Traffic App helps detect disqualified drivers, untaxed cars and stolen vehicles, all at the members’ fingertips. The Offences App provides offence details including penalty points and fines."

By January of 2020, 2,000 Gardaí attached to Roads Policing Units nationwide had been allocated a related device.
