The engravings help officers match recovered bicycles with their rightful owners.
During the pandemic, there were a record number of bikes stolen.
Thieves took 5,668 bikes 2020 and in 2019 5,253 bikes were stolen.
But is engraving your address on your bike a good idea?
People have taken to social media to question the initiative.
Are you just inviting a thieve to take your bike?
Never got the eircode thing on bikes to be honest. If you have an expensive bike, and pop the eircode on it, you're just inviting motivated theft at your property.
The Gardaí also do workshops something on further engraving and recording of bike serial numbers.

A year since the Department of Justice launched its stupid campaign, gardai are still out and about at weekends engraving people's addresses on their bikes. I can't believe this needs to be said but...don't engrave your address on your bike.https://t.co/L3VJgZxq15
