A motorist in the UK has successfully had a driving fine reduced after getting a robot to write an appeal.
Shaun Bosley turned to AI generator Chat GPT to construct a letter to the powers that be.
Mr Bosley said he was given a 'final notice' to pay the fine, but told the AI tool to explain that wasn't the case.
The text generator constructed a thorough reply, which managed to get the fine reduced from 100 pounds to 15, after the motorist was fined for driving through Gatwick Airport's passenger drop-off zone.
Part of the AI response read:
"I understand that it is my responsibility as a driver to be aware of the rules and regulations regarding driving through an airport."
"However, I never received the first notice of the penalty and therefore, did not have the opportunity to contest the charge or pay the fine in a timely manner."
"I believe that the debt collection process has been premature and I request that you reconsider the penalties imposed."
The ChatGPT developers say on the website:
We’ve trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.
