Space enthusiasts will today get to see the first ever photo of a black hole.

It's being announced as part of a series of press conferences in 6 global cities including Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo.

Professor of Physics at University College Cork, Paul Callanan, says there's still so much to learn about them:

"It's not really clear how these massive black holes formed. These observations will give us the first detailed picture of what happens around a black hole"

What can we expect to see in the photo?

It is unclear what will be shown in the photograph as black holes by their very nature are impossible to see with the naked eye since they are so dense no light can escape from them. many scientists have speculated  that the hot gas surrounding the black hole will be highlighted as a silhouette around the rim of the black holes gravitational pull to show the exact shape of black holes.

What time will the photograph be unveiled

At 9am E.T which is 1pm in Ireland.
