A German Shepherd has recovered from major surgery in Manchester after eating three feet of tinsel.

Benji was taken for X-rays by his owner Olivia Mullen - who says she was "totally surprised" he'd eaten the festive decorations.

It's reported Benji had never done anything like this before.

Don't worry though, he's expected to be fully recovered in time to enjoy Christmas with his family.

Vets say tinsel and other shiny objects can attract curious pups to come and try a bite, but can cause severe damage to a pet's intestinal tract.

Benji's story comes as vets, both in Ireland and further afield, remind us to 'pet proof' our homes this Christmas.

Electrocution, upset stomachs and big bills are just some of the problems you may encounter if you don't watch out for your furry friend over the festive period.

Lights, chocolate and decorations are just some of the hazards.

The DSPCA's Gillian Bird has drawn up a list of things that are naughty and nice for our furry friends.
