Tunneling seems to have replaced diggers when it comes to ATM thefts
In the past number of years, we've seen plenty of incidents involving the theft of an ATM by using a digger to pull the machine out of the wall, but now it seems thieves have come up with a more subtle approach.
Investigations are continuing into an attempted theft of the contents of an ATM in Kildare, by tunneling 15 metres underground to get to the machine.
However, the ATM was not taken from the Maxol on the Sallins Road in Naas.
The discovery of the tunnel was made as Ulster Bank staff accessed the site to remove the machine - as the company winds down operations in the area.
The Leinster Leader reports "a tunnel type structure measuring three metres deep and 12 metres wide was constructed between the nearby Grand Canal and the service station building."
The garage is beside a school and Naas GAA, and it seems that thieves tunneled in to the site from nearby grounds.
