They had to field a squad or face a fine.

An amateur soccer team in Germany lost a match by the incredible scoreline of 37-0, after they chose to socially distance from their opponents.

The side on the end of the walloping, SG Ripdorf/Molzen II, only fielded seven players as that was the minimum team size required to complete the fixture.

Their decision was based on the fact that their opponents for the day, SV Holdenstedt II had previously faced off against a team with a player who tested positive for coronavirus, Sky News reports.

Even though all of the Holdenstedt players tested negative for the virus, SG Ripdorf/Molzen II did not feel safe properly competing.

The reason they fielded any players at all was because they risked a €200 fine if they play the match.

Ripdorf co-chair Patrick Ristow told ESPN: "The Holdenstedt players did not understand. But we did not want to risk anything."
He added of his players: "They did not go into direct duels and observed the social distancing rules, keeping two metres between them and Holdenstedt players."
Holdenstedt did not hold back, scoring a goal every two or three minutes.
"There was no reason not to play this game," Holdenstedt coach Florian Schierwater said.
