Woman (40s) arrested in connection with car fire which killed two children

A woman has been arrested in connection with the deaths of two children in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath.

The two year boy and five year old girl died in a fatal car fire at Lacken, on Friday the 9th of September.

Their mother was in the car at the time of the incident and was treated for hospital for her injuries.

Gardaí had prevously upgraded to a murder investigation, saying they believed the car was set on fire deliberately.

A woman, who is in her 40s, is being held at a Garda Station in the midlands.

A Garda statement said:

"Gardaí investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 2 year old infant and 5 year old girl in a fatal car fire at Lacken, Multyfarnham, County Westmeath on Friday, 9th September, 2022, have arrested a female in her 40s.

"She is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the midlands.

"An Garda Síochána will be making no further comment at this time."
