The US Embassy has issued a safety warning to American citizens in Ireland.

It follows a spate of recent assaults in Dublin, including one which left an American musician in hospital with life-altering injuries.

This advisory to American visitors to Ireland was issued by the US Embassy in Dublin on Monday night.

According to to Irish Independent it cites a number of safety measures that visitors here should take.

The alert was issued to US citizens known to be in Ireland, but there is no warning on the US mission's website.

It warns travellers to avoid walking alone, especially at night. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep valuable watches or jewellery hidden from view.

It urges people to keep a low profile, limit the use of headphones and avoid staring at mobile phones in public places.
