Up to 500 Irish passports have been misplaced during delivery or delivered to the wrong address since 2020.
That's according to figures released to Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín, which show a total of 825 documents have been affected.
It's reported Irish passports can be worth up to 5 thousand euro on the black market.
Tóibín is concerned that they may end up in the hands of serious criminals, for use in crimes such as human trafficking.
If your passport is lost you will need to report it to the Gardaí to protect yourself from identity fraud.
The details of lost or stolen passports are shared with to Interpol.
More details on lost or stolen passports can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
