There's no longer enough Gardaí for a visible police presence in Ireland.
Senior Garda officials are warning that low officer numbers have forced the Gardaí into "reactive policing".
Antoinette Cunningham, General Secretary of the AGSI says there are no longer enough Gardaí for a visible police presence in Ireland.
It comes as Fianna Fail TD Willie O'Dea criticised the Justice Minister on the government's new hate speech and crime legislation.
He says the Gardaí need to focus the limited resources they have on addressing the rise in street crime and anti social behaviour in the country.
Antoinette Cunningham agrees:
'I think he's absolutely right to flag something the AGSI has been saying for a long time.'
'The resources that An Garda Síochána have at the present time are the lowest they've had for a very long time.'
'At the end of May Garda numbers had dropped down to thirteen- thousand, nine-hundred and twenty seven.'
'I don't think think the current model of policing is actually working.'
