You may have heard of ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’ before?
If you haven’t, it’s a syndrome that effects the heart caused by a sudden emotional shock, like an unexpected break up.
The emotional event stuns the heart muscle and weakens it.
It was first discovered in Japan in the early 90’s, with the proper medical name being Takotsubo.
Well, recently researchers at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland have discovered that the condition actually permanently weakens the heart long term, similar to how a heart attack does.
During the two-years long study, they found that those who had suffered Takotsubo were quick to tire during the day and unable to exercise, years after the event that caused the condition.
They also found that Takotsubo affects more Women than it does Men.
Quite alarming!
