Pollen counts are still yet to peak

Forecasters in the UK have warned the worst is yet to come for millions of hay fever suffered around Ireland and the UK.

The Met Office is warning that grass pollen, which affects 95 per cent of hay fever sufferers, is about the reach its peak.

They fear that some 20-million people could be affected, even those who have never suffered with hay fever before.

Yolanda Clewlow, manager of the Met Office's UK pollen network, urged sufferers to take antihistamines, keep windows closed and avoid going outside during times when the pollen count is at its peak during the day.

Met Eireann also issued a similar warning earlier this week: ''There will be high to very high grass pollen during warm, dry weather but more moderate in sea breezes on the coasts at times.

‘Weed pollen (nettle, plantain, dock) will also rise to high. Spores rising to high during humid conditions (early hours).''

If you're a sufferer of Hayfever, here are some things you can do to reduce your pain:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible on high pollen days and stay away from grassy areas, especially freshly cut places.
  • Keep windows and doors closed when the pollen count is high. Put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen.
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting into your eyes.
  • Asthma and hay fever sufferers are also told to stay clean, avoid drying clothes outside and to stay away from pets.
  • Shower, wash your hair and change your clothes if you have been outside for an extended period.
  • Avoid drying clothes outdoors.
  • Minimise your contact with pets that have been outdoors and are likely to be carrying pollen.
  • Consider a purifier with a built-in air quality sensor to remove allergens and pollutants from the air.
