The BIG question on people's minds.
Ketchup does not need to be stored in the fridge.
That's according to consumer watchdog Which? who has looked into the hard facts. The company quizzed 444 of its members on their ketchup-storing habits and found that only one in five people examine food labels to see where things should be stored and for how long.
Which? found that it's actually grand to keep your ketchup in the cupboard because vinegar and naturally acidic tomatoes help preserve it. They also found that the likes of HP sauce, honey, soy sauce and malt vinegar are also ok to be stored in your cupboard.
LadBible report that the official stance from Heinz is this:
"Because of its natural acidity, Heinz Ketchup is shelf-stable. However, its stability after opening can be affected by storage conditions."
"We recommend that this product, like any processed food, be refrigerated after opening. Refrigeration will maintain the best product quality after opening."
Which? also found that your egg-based condiments like mayonnaise and salad cream should go in the fridge along with your pesto, maple syrup and tartare sauce. They concluded that:
"We discovered a lot of confusion, misinformation and downright bad habits - including ones that could be putting their health at risk."
