Minister McHugh Doesn't Think History Should Be An Optional Subject

As was reported on the Aidan and Oonagh in the morning breakfast show, there has been a public outcry over plans to remove History as a core subject in the Junior Cycle. The Education Minister has requested that History be given a special core status in the framework for Junior Cycle saying that he doesn't believe History being optional is right for our schools or the times we live in.

Which subjects are core subjects at present?

Of the 21 subjects on offer, only three - Maths, English and Irish - are mandatory, with the other 18 being optional.

Mary O'Rourke - who served as Education Minister between 1987 and 1991 - has welcomed the news and is happy to give him 'three cheers'
