This will have a major impact on the deaf community in Ireland
THE Irish Sign Language Recognition Act to be passed into legislation tomorrow.
ISL is used by roughly 5000-deaf people in Ireland, as well as additional 40,000 family and friends of deaf people.
The act will enable deaf people to access public and private services, as well as information, in their own language.
A spokesperson from the Cork Deaf Club told the Evening Echo: "It will be a historic day for the Irish Deaf community here and abroad. Finally, Deaf people feel that they are recognised as full citizens of Ireland."
The recognition will make a huge difference to the everyday life of deaf people in Ireland, especially when trying to access things like healthcare, the legal system and education.
