Give us the drive-in over the cinema any day!
They dominated the movie landscape in the 1950s and beyond, but the drive-in cinema died a sad and sudden death in the 80s, 90s and 2000s.
However as of recent times we've started to see a resurgence in the amount of drive-in movie events being held.
And it's easy to see why.
Loading up the car with a bunch of blankets and pillows, an arsenal of snacks, kicking the seats back and settling in for a few hours of pure relaxation. They're awesome!
And with Retro-Drive in moves set to return to Ballybrit Racecourse in Galway this weekend, we've come up with five reasons why we prefer loading up the car to the sticky floors of a cinema.
It's intimate.
Rubbing shoulders with strangers, that awkward squeeze when you have to get up and go to the bathroom, that idiot who wont stop talking...you'll find none of those at the drive-in!
It's just you and a carload of people you've selected to be with. The dream.
You can talk all you want.
The car is your protective zone. If you want to chat away during the film, go for it. If you want to sit in silence, you go for that too.
It's your own little world in there and you dictate the rules.
You control the temperature.
Ever been stuck in a cinema that seemed to think it was the middle of winter in Antarctica and had the heating turned up to suit?
In your car you are the master of the climate! There's no sweating it out in cinema seats at the drive-in.
The food is better.
There's multiple reasons why the food is better at the drive-in. Firstly the snack bar is far more imaginative.
This weekend in Galway there be a feast of American food favourites including: Burgers, hot dogs, pizza, chips & dips and doughnuts.
We're drooling already.
It's a novelty.
It's one of the most romanticised things from the past there is. Any feel good movie set back in the 50s or 60s will most likely feature a trip to the drive-in at some stage. That's because it was THE place to be seen back in the day. And here's hoping the trend of going to the drive-in continues in 2019, because we can't wait for more chances to go.
