Donald Trump says he’s an “innocent man” after he says he was charged over his handling of classified documents at his Florida estate.

It’s the first ever federal indictment of a former US president – and a blow to his hopes of returning to the White House next year.

In a video posted to social media, Trump continued to profess his innocence:

Richard Painter was the chief ethics adviser to George W Bush.

He remembers giving a lecture to that administration about classified files.

“I specifically remember telling people ‘if you intentionally remove it, if you lie to the government in the course of an investigation concerning classified information, if you obstruct justice in the investigation, you will go to jail.”

“We’ll see what happens in the case.”
