Gay Byrne was Ireland's most prolific broadcaster, a career that spanned over 6 decades he also sat as the chairman of the road safety authority, he had a private pilots licence and he was a vocal unofficial ambassador for Donegal, spending many summers in his holiday home in Dungloe.
Whither he was supported with rapturous applause and agreement or strongly condemned by those opposed, Gay Byrnes part in shaping a new Ireland via the mediums of Television and Radio can never be diminished.
