This is wheelie great!

You'll soon see cyclists in the west sporting number plates.

It's a new initiative by Mayo County Council to help raise awareness of cycle safety.

70 per cent of road deaths in European cities are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Cyclists in Mayo will be issued with number plates as part of National Bike Week, which kicks off on Saturday, June 22nd.

The bright number plates contain a 2019 Mayo reg, the European flag, and the message 'Share The Road'.

Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council, spoke to Louise on The Hub.

He said he hopes the number plates scheme will increase safety for cyclists:

"The campaign isn't advocating that cyclists should have to use number plates on their bikes, but we're using the number plates to highlight how vulnerable cyclists are.

"And we're appealing to motorists to be aware of the vulnerability of cyclists and to give them 1.5 metres when overtaking, and to share the road."
