Irish Rail is set to give 25 years free travel to the baby born on the Galway to Dublin train yesterday afternoon.
Shortly after 5pm, a woman unexpectedly went into labour on board the 3:05pm train as it approached Kildare.
She gave birth to a baby girl with the help of an off-duty doctor, GP Alan Devine from Donegal, and two nurses, one American and the other Irish nurse Ellen Kennedy.
There was also another woman assisting.
Kildare Train StationIrish Rail's now confirmed that the little girl will receive free travel for the next quarter of a century.
Louise from The Hub spoke to Barry Kenny from Irish Rail about the generous gift.
He said there wasn't any doubt in their minds when they decided to offer it, as it's the first time a baby's been born on an Iarnród Éireann train:
"We're all a bit exhilarated about it, we almost all feel like new parents in that we had this new arrival.
"And I think the nicest thing about it was that there was a really lovely environment on board the train. Obviously this is not where the mom would have chosen to give birth, but everyone really helped out.
"And apparently the cheer that went up the train when they heard the little baby cry for the first time was quite something."
"It's such an unusual thing to happen and such a special thing to happen on board, so we look forward to making those arrangements and handing over that annual ticket each year.
"And we'll certainly be providing something for mom as well."
