171 motorists have been detected going above the speed limit in the first two hours of National Slow Down Day

Drivers in Kildare and Dublin were detected going 129 kilometres per hour in a 100 kilometre zone, while a car was found to be going 90 kilometres and hour in a 60 zone near Stranorlar in Donegal.

Gardaí say a one percent reduction in speed can result in a four percent reduction in the number of fatalities.

Chief superintendent Garda National Traffic Bureau, Ray McMahon explains the past month alone illustrates the type of behaviour they aim to stop.

One example given was a driver in Kildare travelling at 200 kilometres per power in a 120 zone.

Another detection in the last number of weeks was in Longford, where a driver was clocked at 148km per hour in a 50 zone.
