But that no longer applies – with each case now subject to an individual assessment.

Dr Tor Hervig, from the Irish Blood Transfusion Service, says the questions will be personal.

‘We will ask in the past 4 months, have you snorted cocaine or any other drug and then if the answer is yes, you will not be allowed to donate.’
