A new opt-out system of consent for organ donation has been approved by the cabinet today.

Under the new bill, deceased adults will be assumed to be donors unless they stated otherwise while still alive.

Irish golfer Peter Lawrie had his eyesight saved after getting a cornea transplant last year.

Peter says the law should have been enacted years ago:

“I think there’s so many people on a waiting list for much bigger operations than I did”

“I’m just so happy for these people because we all say oh yeah we’d love to give away our organs if something ever happened to us, but we don’t get around to filling in the correct forms or having the donor card, and now all that sort of red tape has come out of it now”
