World Sleep Day: Here are some sleeping fun-facts!

The purpose of sleep remains a scientific mystery... all we know is...

We certainly need it! And we're certainly thankful it exists.

Today, March 16th 2018, marks World Sleep Day!

A global awareness event held annually and hosted by World Sleep Society since 2007.

So to celebrate we thought we'd share a few fun facts about the thing we spend a third of our lives doing!

Here are 12-things you (maybe) didn't know about sleep!

  1. Medieval humans slept in two phases, a deep first sleep from sunset until 2am, followed by a few hours of wakefulness, then a lighter second sleep until dawn.

  2. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even knowing it.

  3. Most dreams involve normal situations with familiar people; bizarre, fantastic or intense dreams are rare.

  4. Children tend to fall asleep faster and sleep longer when they go to bed before 9 p.m. - Good to know!

  5. The sensation of falling when half asleep and jerking yourself awake is called ‘hypnic jerks’

  6. 1 in 4 married couples sleep in separate beds

  7. Within 10-minutes of waking up, 90% of your dream is forgotten

  8. Pain tolerance is reduced by sleep deprivation

  9. Thanh Niên, is a Vietnamese man who claims to have been awake for 47 years.

  10. Sleep experts have discovered a direct link between people’s favourite sleeping positions and their personalities

  11. Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep

  12. Most parents lose between 400 and 750 hours of sleep in each child’s first year.
