The needle was not placed in her food by McDonalds staff

A woman in New Zealand who claimed to have found a needle in her McDonalds fries, may have put the object there herself it has emerged.

Ash Te Weri took to Facebook to warn other people to be vigilant about their food after discovering the needle in a Happy Meal.

She told people to be careful of sharp objects in food, particularly considering it was meant for children.

McDonald’s then carried out a full investigation into the incident which happened in Whanganui, New Zealand.

The chain reviewed CCTV from the restaurant and contacted police.

Officers conducted a search of Ms Te Weri’s home where they found a packet of 20 needles, but one of them was missing.

Detective Inspector Ross McKay said there had been an honest mistake, but other people have accused her of trying to get attention and compensation from McDonald’s. DI McKay said: ‘The woman did the right thing reporting this incident, as did the business. There was no malicious intent here.’ The warning on Ms Te Weri’s Facebook page has now been removed.

Needles in fruits

The incident follows a mass epidemic of needles being found in fruit including strawberries in New Zealand and Australia.

There have been over 100 reports of needles being found in supermarket fruit in Australia.

Many are thought to be copycat cases or social media stunts, however.
