Make-A-Wish Ireland will mark their 30th anniversary, having granted over 2,770 wishes to children living with life threatening illnesses.

As a worldwide organisation it is responsible for granting more than 520,000 wishes globally.

In honour of the 30th anniversary, Make-A-Wish is celebrating World Wish Day with a week of festivities celebrating their Wish recipients.

They are also putting out the call to organisations and civic buildings around the country to celebrate with them by Lighting Up Blue.

The campaign also shines a light on children waiting for their wishes to come true.

Buildings that have given their support so far include The Convention Centre Dublin, Aviva Stadium, NUI Galway, CHQ Building, 3 Arena and Westport House.

CEO of Make-A-Wish Ireland, Susan O'Dwyer spoke to Louise Clarke on The Hub on iRadio about the charities work.

She told iRadio about the excitement surrounding the anniversary:

"So it's, absolutely exciting. It's fantastic. And what we are doing is we have reached out to a number of wish families over the last 30 years, who've had their wishes granted, and they're coming back to us and telling their stories and telling the impact that the wish had on them at the time, and actually continues to have on them as they reflect on the magic of that wish being granted."

Susan explained to Louise some of the wishes that they have granted to children in Ireland, including becoming Sonic The Hedgehog, becoming a rock star  and becoming Queens & Kings.

The experience can be challenging but Susan said:

"It can be emotional, but you know, something it's also humbling and inspirational, because you realise that what may wish does makes an enormous difference, that we bring about the fact that a wish is granted, not just for the child, but for the entire family.

So the whole family experience, the hope and the joy that Make-A-Wish can bring by actually making a child's wish come true."
