Four more have been injured in the incident.
A gunman has killed 12 people in a mass shooting in the US state of Virginia.
Police say a disgruntled employee fired "indiscriminately" at victims at a public-utility company in Virginia Beach.
Four people were also injured in the attack - including a police officer who was saved by his protective vest, before the suspect was shot dead by officers.
Survivors of the shooting have described barricading themselves in a local government office to escape the gunman.
The city's mayor, Bobby Dyer, summed up the mood at the popular holiday spot;
"This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach.
The people involved are our friends, co-workers, neighbours, colleagues."
Virginia's Governor says the US state's offering its full support to the survivors and the families of the victims.
Ralph Northam says he's devastated by the "unspeakable and senseless violence";
"My deepest condolences and prayers go to the families of those who left home this morning and will not return tonight.
That they should be taken in this manner is the worst kind of tragedy."
