Trump's administration has even been compared to the Nazi's over it's alleged human rights abuses on its own borders

A sense of shock has enveloped the developed world over the past 24-Hours.

As U.S. president Donald Trump continues to commit a litany of bizarre and potentially damaging decisions - This time by pulling the U.S out of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

So what does this mean, and what do the Council do?

What is the Human Rights Council?

While not a legally binding authority, the U.N Human Rights Council carries moral authority.

It meets three times a year to examine human rights violations worldwide.

And has recently sent independent investigators to examine events in places including Syria, North Korea, Myanmar and South Sudan.

Why has he withdrawn?

The U.S has sighted several reasons why it's withdrawn from the Council - mainly they feel it doesn't go far enough in protecting Human Rights.

Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the "disproportionate focus and unending hostility toward Israel is clear proof that the council is motivated by political bias, not by human rights."

They have also accused the council of being "hypocritical and self-serving."

Haley has slammed Russia, China, Cuba and Egypt for thwarting U.S. efforts to reform the council.

She also criticised countries which shared U.S. values and encouraged Washington to remain, but "were unwilling to seriously challenge the status quo.''

Negative Global reaction

The global reaction to Trump's decision to withdraw has been overwhelmingly negative.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says he has made a huge mistake.

"I think it's deeply regrettable,'' he said.

U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said the decision will make advancing human rights globally even more difficult, saying: "Given the state of human rights in today's world, the U.S. should be stepping up, not stepping back."

Human Rights Watch executive director Ken Roth said: "The U.N. Human Rights Council has played an important role in such countries as North Korea, Syria, Myanmar and South Sudan, but all Trump seems to care about is defending Israel."

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the decision...

Strange timing

The shock moves comes as the United States faces intense criticism for detaining children separated from their immigrant parents at the U.S.-Mexico border and detaining children in inhumane conditions.

The scenes of crying children, with some even place din cages has sparked a sense of outrage and despair across the globe.

The body has a permanent standing agenda item on suspected violations committed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories that Washington wanted removed.

The council last month voted to probe killings in Gaza and accused Israel of using excessive force, a probe to which the United States and Australia cast the only "no" votes.

The United States is the first member to withdraw from the council.
