President Michael D. Higgins has lead tributes to golfing legend Christy O'Connor Junior who has passed away suddenly.
The 67-year-old died overnight in Tenerife - he is survived by his wife Ann and his daughter and son.
NUI Galway has joined the messages of sympathy, saying it was a privilege for the institution to be linked with Mr O'Connor.
The university awarded Christy an honorary degree to recognise his success as an international golfer and his achievements as one of Ireland's best sporting ambassadors in 2006.
