5,000 Liverpool fans will make the trip to Rome for tomorrow night's match

Police say they can "guarantee the safety of Liverpool fans" at tomorrow night's Champions League semi-final second leg against Roma in the Italian Capital.

As long as they stay within Italian rules.

Security will be on high alert, after the first leg at Anfield was marred by the attack on Meath man Sean Cox - who remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Roma fans Filippo Lombardi, 20, and Daniele Sciusco, 29, have both been charged with violent disorder in relation to the assault.

Public order commissioner, Giorgio Luciani, told BBC Sport the police operation in Rome is a "tough challenge" involving 1,200 officers.

"We are used to managing these events. For the Rome Marathon we organised a police service of more than 1,000 people. For the derby between Roma and Lazio it was the same.

"We can guarantee the safety of Liverpool supporters if they respect the rules and make the day as normal as they can.

"We don't ask for anything special, just that they respect the rules," he said.

Liverpool have sold all of their allocated 5,000 tickets for tomorrow's match.

Touching letter

Meanwhile Liverpool Captain Jordan Henderson has penned a touching letter to Sean's local GAA Club St. Peters Dunboyne:

"The situation Sean and his family are facing now makes something like playing football look trivial as you could imagine, but as a group of players we wanted to show our support and we thought having your club's jersey hanging alongside ours in the dressing room was a subtle way of doing that.

"I've never had the privilege to meet Sean, but in recent days I've been reading in the media about how much he's loved and respected in the community of Dunboyne and in particular the important role he plays at your club.

"Our greatest wish in this moment is that Sean can return home with his family and see that the two sporting clubs he cherishes the most came together because of him."

The second leg of the Champions Leauge Semi-Final between Roma and Liverpool kicks off at 7:45PM tomorrow evening.
