This defies belief...
Snapchat has drawn strong criticism for making a joking reference towards violence against women.
This comes after the social media company made light of Chris Brown's domestic assault against his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
Via an image, Snapchat asked it's users whether they'd prefer to 'Slap Rihanna' or 'Punch Chris Brown,' over the weekend.
Speaking to Mashable, a spokesperson for Snapchat said: ''The ad was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.''
Unsurprisingly, the blunder sent Twitter into meltdown.
Even Chelsea Clinton - the daughter of Bill and Hilary Clinton - commented on the controversial post, calling the advert 'awful'.
@Snapchat
This was one of the ads on Snapchat. What. The. Fuck.
How dare y'all disrespect @rihanna like this. Smh pic.twitter.com/JVbfzD9t69— Tay (@Tay_ole) March 11, 2018
Is it just me, or is this ad that popped up on my Snapchat extremely tone deaf? Like what were they thinking with this? pic.twitter.com/7kP9RHcgNG

I know that social media ads go through an approval process from the platform.
This means @Snapchat approved an ad that makes light of domestic violence.
The update ain’t the only thing that’s wack over there, friends. https://t.co/PmbJn4zCel

Just awful. Awful that anyone thinks this is funny. Awful that anyone thinks this is appropriate. Awful that any company would approve this. Thank you Brittany for calling this out.

This comes after Snapchat's stock plummeted by six per cent when Kylie Jenner tweeted she was no longer using the app.
CNN reports this will wipe approximately $1.3 billion U.S off the company's market value.
On 21 February, the new mum tweeted:
sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me... ugh this is so sad.
