The upcoming heatwave has the potential to break the all-time temperature record in Ireland
With Met Eireann forecasting the warmest weather of the year to date over the weekend and the coming days, the Irish public is being urged to be responsible in the sun.
In fact, the weather will so warm there's a chance the all-time record high temperature in Ireland - currently set at 33.3 degrees in Kilkenny WAY back in 1887 - could be challenged early next week.
However, the pleasant conditions bring with the danger of severe sun damage.
And the risk is especially amplified for those who spend most of their week locked away in an office.
Speaking to the Journal, Kevin O’Hagan, a Cancer Prevention Manager with the society, says that people routinely underestimate the power of the Irish sun and don’t realise that it can damage their skin even if they are only exposed to it in short bursts.
O’Hagan said that people who work indoors often go out unprepared for the times that they will be in the sun.
“People who are inside a lot often go out quickly and without planning. We’re warning people to be careful in the sun. We’re advising them to think ahead and bring a hat, bring sunscreen,” he said.
So, if you do plan on enjoying the sun this weekend, what's safest way to go about it?
Here's a few tips on how to be Sun-smart this weekend:
ONE. Always wear sunscreen
TWO. Wear protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses
THREE. Choose a sunscreen that has good protection against UVA rays as well as a high SPF
FOUR. Never, ever use sunbeds
FIVE. Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm, find some shade.
Have fun out there!
