Met Eireann warns an ‘arctic airmass’ is expected for the Bank Holiday weekend.
Freezing nights, hail and sleet showers... and even the chance of snow. That's what the upcoming bank holiday weekend has in store for us, according to Met Eireann.
The national forecaster has even warned of an ‘arctic airmass’ expected to hit to Ireland at week's end.
Things will start getting really chilly on Thursday night and forecasters have warned temperatures could drop to a freezing -2C over the weekend.
While daytime temperatures will struggle to get above single figures.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Met Eireann’s Liz Walsh said: “It will be a northerly airflow, and that air, if it’s coming straight down from the north, is coming from the Arctic. That’s why it’s so cold.
“There is high certainty that is going to happen and that it will last throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.
“The UK could hang on to the colder conditions longer than Ireland because we’re further west and we’re more in the firing line from the Atlantic. Often the Atlantic gives us milder weather before it gets to the UK.”
Ms Walsh added temperatures for the long weekend will be “below average.”
“It’s a showery flow, so some of those showers could be heavy with hail and there is a risk of thunder as well,'' she said.
And it looks like Saturday will be the coldest of the lot.
Ms Walsh said: “Saturday night is looking like a cold one from our perspective.
We'll definitely be grabbing the hot water bottle!
