Man arrested after smashing ice-cream van through front of Catholic church

A man has been arrested after he smashed ice cream van smashed through the front of a catholic church, before taking out an imitation firearm, in Tralee, Co Kerry, after 9pm last night.

The vehicle caused extensive damage when it drove through the locked gates of St John’s Church on Castle Street.

Thankfully, there was no one in the Church at the time, and there were no injuries. The vehicle fled from the scene and was chased by the Gardai.

However Gardai tracked the offender a few minutes later at Gallowsfield, Tralee.

Upon confrontation, the man then pulled out an imitation firearm.

He was then arrested under the mental health act and is being treated by mental health services.

St John’s Catholic Church is a well know landmark and is near the town park.

Masses haven't been affected and parishioners have been asked to use the side door.
