Calvin Cullen is accused of killing the father of one after a Halloween night party.

A twenty-year-old man charged with the murder of David Boland told Gardai: “I never meant for him to die,” a court heard yesterday.

Calvin Cullen is accused of killing father of one David Boland, 34, after a Halloween night party in Athy, Co Kildare.

He was led into a special sitting of Naas district court in Kildare on crutches yesterday.

Mr Boland was fatally stabbed in the early hours of last Thursday.

He was found with serious wounds outside a clothes shop on Duke Street in the town just before 6am.

He was then rushed by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where he died from his injuries.

“I hope they believe I didn’t mean for that to happen.”

The court heard that accused Cullen, from Greenhills in Athy, allegedly became involved in a row with the deceased, who was stabbed three times, one of them fatal.

Detective Garda Niall Bambrick of Athy Garda station told the court that when charges were put to Cullen in the station just before 11pm on Saturday, he replied:

“I never meant for him to die.

“I’m so sorry for his family.

“I hope they believe I didn’t mean for that to happen.”

The court also heard Cullen has been receiving medical assistance for his injuries while in Garda custody.

Defence lawyers asked for a psychiatric assessment to be carried out on the accused.
