"We thought what's happening in Ireland''
Machete attack victim Mikolaj Wilk made a desperate attempt to speak to gardaí, while still clinging to life after the brutal attack that went on to claim his life, the independent reports.
Mr Wilk (35), also known as Nick, sustained fatal injuries when he was assaulted by up to four men who entered his home in the quiet area of Maglin, Ballincollig in Cork just after 3am on Sunday morning, and attacked the Polish national, as his wife Elzbieta desperately tried to intervene.
Gardaí found Mr Wilk, a father-of-two, conscious but incoherent outside the front door of his home. He reportedly attempted to speak to gardaí before they rushed to give him medical assistance.
Tragically, he later died later in hospital.
Mr Wilk had been living in Ireland for several years, after relocating from Poland. He worked in garden maintenance.
His wife Elzbieta desperately tried in vain to protect her husband in a frenzied machete attack which, quite unfortunately, was witnessed by the couple's young children witnessed.
Elzbieta, in her early 30s and also from Poland, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the attack. It is understood that she lost at least one finger as she struggled to save her husband.
Gardaí are puzzled as to what motivated the attackers to commit such a brutal crime, on a man described locally as a hard working quiet man.
Shocked
Local councillor for Ballincollig-Carrigaline Derry Canty said the people of Cork are "shocked" by the violence.
Speaking to RTE, he said: "When the news first broke, we thought it was an aggravated burglary and people thought 'not again',
"When news broke that the man had died and the woman was in a serious condition, then everyone stood up and noticed.
"We thought what's happening in Ireland, and what's happening in Cork, in this rural area... this man had his own business, a gardening business, he was self-employed, he got married seven years ago and they moved to Ballincollig.
"You can imagine being inside your bed at 3am in the middle of the night and a gang come into your house waving machetes," he continued.
"The people of Ballincollig are just in total shock. Anywhere you go, house to house, shop to shop, everyone's talking about it, just how disgusted they are.
"[People are saying] he was a very private man, he had his customer base built up.
"He was just an ordinary, happy-go-lucky guy, a married man with his two children, working away."
