Irish speaking and fee-paying schools did better overall.
For the fifth year in a row, the best performing secondary school in the country is Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ in Limerick.
The Sunday Times Best Schools Guide published today shows around 96 per cent of its girls progress to university.
The list also reveals Scoil Mhuire, Sidney Place, Cork is in second place. Gaelscoil Colaiste Iosagain in Booterstown is third, up two places on last year, and is the top school in South Dublin.
Dublin's fee-paying Gonzaga College in Ranelagh is in fourth place and is Ireland's top boys' school.
Galway Gaelcholaiste, Colaiste na Coirbe is Ireland's best mixed school.
Girls schools take up seven places out of the top 10 in this year's guide.
The Top 10 Secondary Schools are:

- Salerno Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Salthill, Galway.
- Mount Anville Secondary School, Goatstown, Dublin 14.
