An Irishman is dead in Germany after being shot by Police.

The incident happened on Wednesday in the city of Hamburg after law enforcement responded to a domestic call.

It is being reported the matter is being investigated by German Internal Investigations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland has said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

Meanwhile, a second Irishman has died on Mount Everest in the space of just over a week.

The family of Wicklow's Seamus Lawless yesterday called off the search for the Trinity Professor who went missing on the mountain a week ago, while expedition leaders have confirmed that Galway climber Kevin Hynes died in his tent yesterday at 7,000 metres.

It comes as concerns are raised over traffic jams at the summit, as hundreds of climbers rush for a weather window to reach the top.

Everest mountaineer and author Pat Falvey says many things can add to the dangers at high altitude, like "high winds which zap your energy."

He adds that "running out of oxygen" can be like "being on a plane and starving the oxygen - you don't last long if your body hasn't acclimatised".
