The HSE says vaccine provides the best protection against infection.
A warning has been issued to parents by the HSE after an outbreak of the mumps in Galway in recent weeks.
Parents of students at a school in the town of Claregalway received the notice after several children exhibited symptoms of the disease.
This comes after a number of reported cases in the region, primarily between the ages of 15 and 29.
The HSE is advising anyone who is uncertain whether they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine to ask for an additional dose, RTE reports.
The vaccine provides the best protection against infection, but it should be noted that it could be as long as 28 days before it takes effect.
Parents are also advised that any children who show mumps-like symptoms are kept out of school for at least five days after the onset of neck swelling.
